BLAIR NAMES HIS LEAVING DATE



TONY BLAIR today announced he will quit as Labour leader and stand down as Prime Minister on June 27 after a decade in Downing Street.

The Prime Minister finally confirmed the worst-kept secret in Westminster during an emotional lunchtime speech at the Trimdon Labour Club in his Sedgefield constituency.

Mr Blair said: “Today I announce my decision to stand down from the leadership of the Labour Party.

“The party will now select a new leader.

“On the 27th of June I will tender my resignation from the post of Prime Minister to the Queen.”

The announcement brings an end to months of speculation about the exact timetable for his exit from power.

Local people were queuing to get into the red-brick club from early this morning, where security was tight.

Officers in fluorescent jackets were keeping a close eye on the comings and goings in the former pit village, but traffic was still allowed to flow freely along the main road through it in front of the club.
