Vodafone exec still in denial over loss of iPhone contracts
Vodafone chief executive Arun Sarin has been making headlines quite nicely this week, first with his comments about the iPhone and its effect on subscribers. Sarin is back in the news today with some new thoughts for Bloomberg about the iPhone, but his view that Vodafone will get another chance at a contract within the next year only makes Vodafone sound like even more of a sore loser.
On the face of it, the statement that Vodafone will have another negotiation with Apple within “six to twelve” months looks pretty… shall we say, optimistic. AT&T’s exclusive contract with Apple is for five years, so I doubt Verizon will get a crack at the iPhone in the US anytime soon. And if AT&T’s deal is five years long, I’d expect the European contracts to have similar terms, especially if they’re forking over as much revenue as people think they are. Keep in mind, though, that Vodafone runs networks all across Europe, including Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and a whole host of other countries. And while Northern Cyprus may not see iPhones anytime soon, it’s possible that Apple will look to expand into other European countries eventually, bringing Vodafone back into the picture.
